New gardens at Thames Hospital thanks to Rotary
The courtyard gardens at Thames Hospital have been a feature of the hospital’s environment since its redevelopment three years ago.
And it is thanks to the work of many selfless volunteers from the local Rotary Club that the environment regularly draws praise from patients, visitors and staff. It was Rotary Club members who designed, installed, and maintained three exceptional gardens.
Most patients in Thames Hospital have a view out their windows of one of the gardens. Family meet in the courtyards, a wedding was recently held there, and the Salvation Army Christmas concert takes place there.
Last year Rotary members started a further garden outside the northern rooms near the hospital’s feature jacaranda tree. It previously was home to the hospital generator and is now transformed into a tranquil, beautiful garden designed by Rotarians John and Trish Uffindell.
Of special note is the work of Lyn Johnson and Brenda Bowen (Rotarian partners) who tirelessly maintain the gardens every month.
Waikato DHB chief operating officer Jan Adams met with representatives of Rotary last week (27 April 2012) to express her appreciation of their efforts.
“What you have done here is amazing and I thank you on behalf of the DHB and all the patients and visitors who can appreciate the beauty you created,” she said.
In the new garden, Mr Uffindell used large tree stumps which he sourced from a nearby rural property.
Also present at the ceremony was chief executive Craig Climo and deputy chair Sally Christie.
