Northtec Students Gold and Silver: Maori Student Hui

Northtec Students Gold and Silver At National Council of Māori Student Nurses Hui

NorthTec student nurses scored big at the recent annual National Council of Student Māori Nurses Hui in Nelson, with Kaitaia’s Caroline Snowden winning gold and Whangarei’s Aniwaniwa Mahanga taking out silver for their exemplar presentations.

“Last year we won silver so, to take out gold and silver at such a prestigious event is a wonderful achievement for our students. Their success is a measure of the , dedication and passion they have for their nursing careers and the academic achievement of our Māori nursing students,” Nursing Lecturer Christine Sapwell said of the 7 May to 10 May event at the Whakatu Marae.

“Caroline’s exemplar explored her experience of resuscitating an infant in the community; and Aniwaniwa spoke of the importance of Whanau in health and wellbeing.”

Teresa Wynyard of Kaikohe was NorthTec’s third Māori student to be chosen to present to the Hui and although she didn’t medal, her timely exemplar on looking at rheumatic fever in the Northland was well received.

There was even more good news eminating from the Hui with Northland being chosen to host the 2014 Hui . The venue and arrangements are still to be confirmed but will likely reflect Northland’s rich history and cultural influence on healthcare in Northland.

“We’re excited to be bringing the event to the Northland and we’ll definitely have a strong NorthTec presence both in the organisation and hosting of next years hui” Christine said.
