Caring for those who care for others - Free dental care

Caring for those who care for others

Free dental care for hundreds of family carers nationwide, on May 5th 2018

17 April 2018

From the sugar tax debate to calls to make dental care fully funded, oral health continues to be in the hearts and minds of New Zealanders.
On May 5th, 2018 free dental care is being offered at Lumino The Dentists practices up and down the country.

Carers NZ, the national body that provides information, advice, learning and support to family carers and New Zealand dental business Lumino the Dentists have partnered up for the second year to help support deserving Kiwis.

Hundreds of family carers will benefit from this year’s Lumino Day, be it a hygiene service or simple dental procedures such as fillings.

More than 420,000 people in New Zealand assist a family member who is sick, injured, or has a disability. For many, this has meant a major loss of income and up to 30 hours of additional unpaid care work every week.

As you can imagine, this doesn’t leave much time to focus on your own well-being.

Lumino’s Head of Marketing, Kerry Dunphy says Lumino Day is about giving back.
“We know that good oral health has a huge impact on our overall wellbeing but visiting the dentist is low on the priority list for New Zealanders, particularly for those people with major pressures on their time, such as family carers. We couldn’t think of a better organisation to partner with, or people to open our doors to,” she says.

“It’s our way of giving back to our communities and saying thank you to family carers for the selfless work they do. The day is simply about providing carers with an opportunity to focus on themselves and their own self-care.”
