Models, Issues, Opportunities For Contemporary Curatorial Practice

An international forum presented by Museums Aotearoa and the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery. 17-19 September 1999, New Plymouth, New Zealand. Features 30 Asia acific Speakers.

80 International and New Zealand specialists meet in New Plymouth this week to explore models, issues and strategies for curating in the Asia acific region.

Key session themes of the forum include:

Locality of Culture and the new Globalism

- Outside the Museum - the post-industrial city as a site for curatorial practice

Value of Research - intellectual property or cultural capital

The Curator as Activist and Change Agent

- Publishing and Exhibition Markets and Curatorial Support Structures

- Bicultural and Asia Pacific Models for Curating

The forum takes place in a number of locations in New Plymouth, including the Govett-Brewster Art Gallery, Taranaki Museum, Owae Marae, and the Plymouth International Hotel.

Curating Now will open with a Powhiri and function hosted by the New Plymouth District Council and Museums Aotearoa at the Govett- Brewster Art Gallery on Thursday 16 September 1999 at 6.00pm. Guest speaker will be Martin Mathews, Acting Chief Executive, Ministry of Culture and Heritage, Wellington.

On Friday evening at 6.00pm 17 September 1999, the Right Honourable Helen Clark MP, Leader of the Opposition, will launch the New Zealand premier of the exhibition Close Quarters in association with the Forum.
