Glass Floor To Be Tested

Recycled glass set in resin is to be tested as a new type of flooring at the Christchurch Convention Centre.

The Christchurch City Service’s committee yesterday decided to hold a trial when asked by the Recovered Materials Foundation to consider using the new product in council venues.

The foundation has held discussions with Council staff and the convention centre staff about using the glass flooring in the conference halls and other venues. The existing convention centre floor is concrete slab with carpet squares being laid on top to produce the finished surface. Due to continual lifting and re-laying of the carpets squares, as well as high use, the carpet is wearing out.

The foundation says a solution is to use the glass carpet and using a roll-out carpet for formal dinners and such like.

The foundation told the committee that the cost would be the lower over time.
The glass used is taken from Christchurch waste and the foundation’s chief executive, Graeme King, reported to the committee that the material, called glass carpets, had been used in the Christchurch Polytechnic library and the Espresso café in Cashel Street.

Mr King said glass particles could have their colour changed and were laid to form patterns. The particles were set in place by a resin system “that resulted in a very durable, maintenance friendly surface”. It had good slip resistance.

The committee decided to set up a demonstration patch at the convention centre.
