Put Bluff oysters on the Christmas menu

Puckering up under the mistletoe takes on added meaning this year with the news that there’s still plenty of fresh Bluff oysters available.

According to Graham Wright of Barnes Oysters in Invercargill, there should be about 15,000 dozen of the southern delicacy available in January. That represents about 20 per cent of the last of the season’s stock.

Woolworths and Big Fresh supermarkets successfully tendered for the oysters fished under a special Bluff oyster management research programme designed to provide for the future of the fishery.

Big Fresh spokesperson Peter Garwood said he expected supplies to last well in to the new year.

“What better way to celebrate Christmas, a special New Year and summer at the beach than with some succulent Bluff oysters,” Garwood maintains.

About one million oysters will have been harvested since September in a bid to extract spawn and help the Foveaux Strait beds grow.

So it may pay to watch how keen you are to pucker up under the mistletoe this year.
