NEWSFLASH: Pathologist Apologises
The man at the centre of the Gisborne cervical smear inquiry today read a public statement of apology to an emotional audience.
In a formal manner Dr Michael Bottrill told the packed hall, he offered apologies and sincerely sympathized with the woman whose lives his mis-diagnosis had affected.
Dr. Bottrill said he did not know all of the names of the women involved in the inquiry, as he did not consult with patients as a Pathologist. He showed little emotion throughout the ceremony.
The atmosphere was tense during the sitting, after a group of the affected women turned their backs on Dr. Bottrill when he took the stand.
After the statement, one of five original women who complained about Dr. Bottrill to authorities, refused to accept his apology, which she called “pathetic”.
Dr. Bottrill
would begin to give evidence to the Inquiry
soon.
