NOT SHARP: Empty Box Bought For $988

A not particularly sharp online auction enthusiast who thought they had purchased a "PlayStation 2 Original Box And Receipt" on the eBay Auction site for Christmas, received something of a surprise when their package arrived in the mail.

It turned out our less than sharp purchaser had purchased exactly what it said on the auction site in the description field, i.e. an “original PlayStation 2 Box and receipt”, but no PlayStation!

According to a report of the transaction on internet news site TheRegister.co.uk bidding started for the lot at $9.99 on December 27.

Over the three day online auction 39 bids were placed by PlayStation enthusiasts. The winner in the race was one "arturofuente 13", who thought they had achieved something of a bargain at US$425 (NZ$988).

The seller, who goes by the user name "tru2dis2k" and lives in Cleveland in the US, very kindly offered to pay for the shipping.

Later a brief contretemps ensued in the feedback profile section of the eBay website.

arturofuente 13: "Complaint: Buyer Beware!!! Misleading information about item. Paid $425 for an empty box!"

Tru2dis2k: "I sent what was promised in the auction. I do not rip people off. She's a liar."

eBay has now deleted the auction item from its archive but TheRegister.co.uk’s story on the incident can be viewed at:
