Mrs White received the award for services to painting and printmaking. Her work is well known throughout New Zealand.

She is recognised as a key figure in the development of the New Zealand 'regionalist' style. Her work often depicts people in rural landscapes.

She has been a full-time painter and printmaker since 1972.

Mrs White said she was "really pleased" to receive the award and that she was having a Pacific Island themed party in Carterton to celebrate.
