12:15 Associate Maori Affairs Minister John Tamihere.
Over the weekend Mr Tamihere attended a major Hui for urban Maori at the Hoani Waititi Marae. Among topics discussed was the formation of a new Maori Political Party. Contentious stuff for a Minister inside cabinet. He's on The Wire today to clarify what is going on with Labour's Maori block.
12:40 Deputy Prime Minister Dr. Michael Cullen.
On Monday the Waitangi Tribunal delivered a report on the way the Labour government handled the foreshore and seabed policy debate, and on its proposed policy solutions. The report was critical in a number of places. It asked whether parliament had the right to legislate away customary rights and whether the govt had equated customary rights with property rights. If it sounds complicated that is because it is, but this is the central problem behind this whole foreshore debate - who should own the foreshore. IDeputy Prime Minister Dr Michael Cullen spoke with Simon Pound this morning to try to get to the bottom of the complex and confusing customary rights issue. It is quite a detailed discussion - but that is where the devil lies.
