Swarm Of Earthquakes Hits Wellington Region

Location Map From Geonet.org.nz

Since 6.54pm this evening there have been five earthquakes in roughly the same spot 40km south east of Martinborough off the Wairarapa Coast.

The most recent of these at 10.26pm was the largest at 5.2 on the richter scale, and was felt widely in the Wellington region, including at Scoop HQ where it caused a relatively light woozy motion over a period of a few seconds.

The swarm of Wairarapa quakes followed two other earthquakes in the lower North Island today, one near Hastings at 5.19pm and one in the Cook Strait north-west of Porirua at 1.38pm.
