A Week Of It: PM's Chief Press Secretary Gives Campaign The Once Over

For much of the last nine years Mike Munro has been working seven day weeks living, breathing and talking politics. Whilst willing to chat about the just-completed election campaign Mr Munro retained the noble desire to keep himself mostly out of the limelight, declining to be immortalised on the internet pictured with his steaming hot chocolate. Consumer's Institute Ticks Off Online Auction Traders

- Parallel importers are using online auctions to sell their products and many side-step their legal responsibilities, says Consumer magazine. In an article published this month, Consumer says some traders selling popular products like iPods, digital cameras, watches and radar detectors mislead customers about their rights under the Consumer Guarantees Act. “These internet traders are retailers and have to honour their obligations under the Fair Trading and the Consumer Guarantees Acts,” says Consumer investigative writer Martin Craig. Business Roundtable Says Greens Charm Unconvincing

- Last week the Green Party invited representatives of business to a briefing aimed at demonstrating that there was no reason to be frightened about its influence on the new government. The so-called charm offensive did not succeed. Why? Some commentaries, such as a Dominion Post editorial, wrongly put the failure down to an uncompromising attitude on the part of business and an unwillingness to consider green views. In fact Green policies are well understood by business groups and some of them line up, such as the party’s opposition to the Cullen superannuation fund. See... Why the Greens’ Charm Offensive Failed [1]

Scoop Satire: Vic Gets High Five For Suppression Of Information

    - Satire: Lyndon Hood writes that emerging from a traditional smoke-filled meeting this afternoon, representatives of the New Zealand Conspirators Association praised the administration of Victoria University of Wellington for actions furthering the suppression of information. "The publication of leaked confidential information is an important part of the democratic process, allowing abuses to be revealed and governments and businesses to be held to account for their actions," an NZCA spokesman told a carefully-selected group of journalists... United Nations Struggles To Curb Anti-Refugee Hostility

    - An increasingly hostile environment marked by violence, endemic human rights abuses and waning generosity among traditionally hospitable nations is hampering United Nations efforts to protect millions of uprooted people around the world, according to a senior UN refugee agency official. Addressing an Executive Committee meeting of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Geneva yesterday, the agency’s Director of International Protection Erika Feller recited a litany of abuses ranging from banditry and murder in a Tanzanian camp to the arrest of lawyers defending raped women in Sudan to the cold-blooded executions of teenage boys in Colombia.
