Affairs: UN Moves Against North Korea With Sanctions
List
The United Nations Security Council’s
resolution on North Korea is a decisive response to
Pyongyang’s claims of having conducted a nuclear test,
says Foreign Minister Winston Peters. Resolution 1718
imposes a range of measures to curb the further development
of North Korea’s nuclear weapons programme. It was adopted
under Chapter 7 of the UN Charter, which all member states,
including New Zealand, are obliged to follow. See... Peters

Medicines:
No Change To Herceptin Funding
Today's announcement by
Pharmac's clinical advisory committee not to fund Herceptin
comes as no surprise, says National's Associate Health
spokeswoman (Pharmacare), Dr Jackie Blue. "In response to a
question in Parliament last week on whether Pharmac would be
funding Herceptin, Mr Hodgson said 'we did not think that it
was worth a $30 million per annum investment'." See... Hodson

News: USA Awards 17 NZ Defence Personnel With
Medals
Defence Minister Phil Goff welcomed the
awarding of medals today by the United States to 17 members
of the New Zealand Defence Force. "Ten New Zealanders have
been awarded the Bronze Star and seven have been awarded the

Auditor
General's Report: Cullen Talks Retrospective Legislation
On Agenda
Finance Minister Michael Cullen
says legislation to retrospectively validate election
campaign spending found illegal by the auditor general will
be a confidence measure. Speaking on TV One’s Agenda
programme, Dr Cullen said he had a report from Treasury
which said the Government had to pass validating legislation
because Treasury's clear advice was that refunding the money
by itself would have no impact on the original conclusion of
unlawfulness by the Auditor General. See... Agenda

And Sport: Parliamentarians Foot It Out With Media In
Exercise-Off
The Parliamentary Push Play challenge
starts today, with MPs and press gallery journalists taking
up the call to get on the move as part of Push Play Nation,
Sport and Recreation Minister Trevor Mallard said today.
"The aim of this year's Parliamentary Push Play Challenge is
not about finding the fittest, the fastest, or the strongest
– rather it's about encouraging all of us to lead healthy
lifestyles by incorporating regular physical activity into
our everyday lives." See... Parliament

Society:
Govt Suggests Charity Should Begin Out Of Politics
The
Government should re-think the moves it has set in train to
strip charities of their tax exempt status from February
2007 if they become too active in political advocacy, Green
Party Social Development Spokesperson Sue Bradford says.
"The Government is trying to force charities into a 19th
century mould of voluntary work. Caring for the victims is
essential work. See... Charities
political role vital for democracy [1]
