Topol triumphs, delights in standing ovation
AUCKLAND theatre audiences traditionally are tough nuts to crack when it comes to handing out standing ovations. And mostly it’s because we haven’t really known whether it’s appropriate, or not, to stand for the performance just accepted.

For a visit to live theatre in Auckland has down the decades been an occasional social outing for most, apart from the small and loyal creative arts community that now thrives in strength, numbers and momentum.
However, a standing ovation’s a very positive action and makes one feel good. And as the Civic Theatre arose en masse to Chaim Topol at the end of Tuesday’s opening night performance of Fiddler on the Roof, his face was a picture of true delight, in between bows.
