This latest dazzling dance creation of acclaimed Wellington dancer and choreographer Vivek Kinra, presents the story of Lord Vishnu - one of the pillars of hinduism.

The tale of Vishnu and his "avatars" (incarnations) builds on the concept of 'Dharma' (justice) and the destruction evil. 'Incarnations' is an intensely visual experience expressed in a style of dance taught around India but originating in south India: Bharata Natyam. the epicentre of this dance form is the state of Tamil Nadu.

Kinra and an expertly trained ensemble of young female dancers accompanying him on stage, used an array of elaborate body, hand and facial expressions to infuse coherence and style to the multiple-act dance extravaganza.

While indian Art caters to an indian audience in many instances, it is worth noting that spectators present at the opening night seemed to represent an even wider swath than during The Mudra Dance Company's previous shows. For this and the very well executed display of colours and artistry, 'Incarnations' is a success. Wellington's status as the cultural capital of New Zealand is safe.

'Incarnations' plays at Memorial Hall (Victoria University in Kelburn, Wellington) on: Friday, August 15th - 8:00 p.m. Saturday, August 16th - 8:00 p.m. Sunday, August 17th - 4:00 p.m.
