John Key and his posse this morning announced specific plans for infrastructure spending. At $500 million out of an available economic rescue package of 5 billion, at least one press gallery member wondered if it was worth turning out for first thing in the morning.
Ministers said these projects, in roading, state housing projects, school internet and construction and mostly have any required approvals and can be fast-tracked to within the next 18 months. Many are commitments which have been brought forward.
Finance Minister Bill English said it had been difficult to identify such projects. Many projects announced by the previous Government were unfunded or unready, and infrastructure plans faced intertia in the public service and consenting process.
Further announcements are expected as specific plans are completed.
