The Labour, Green And Progressive parties launched an inquiry into bank interest rates today, after efforts to set up a select committee inquiry were stymied.

Labour Leader Phil Goff said he hoped Reserve Bank Governor Alan Bollard would be allowed to address the inquiry, and expected that banks would want to take the chance to explain their actions.

Green party co-leader Russel Norman said this would be the only avenue for the public to have a say on the matter.

Progressive Party leader Jim Anderton said he wanted banks to explain the discrepancy between rates charged in New Zealand and Australia, by the Australian owned banks.

Speaking order: Goff, Norman, Anderton and Cunliffe
