Kiwis Have Their Say On Ultra Fast Broadband - 3

Why New Zealanders want an ultra-fast broadband network.

Every week, we will bring you a selection of comments from Vector’s fibre to the door website.

Here’s what Kiwi’s have had to say this week in support of Vector’s effort to bring fibre to the door of Aucklanders …

I've lived in a few other places in the world - both developed and what is considered "third world", and nowhere else is internet service as bad and expensive as in NZ! Particularly for a country that is considered to be "remote from the rest of the world" the internet provides a unique opportunity to connect and take part in what's happening out there. But the country's established players - foremost Telecom NZ - have let NZ down over and over again. Example: I am using a lot of continued learning via webinars. That's a great way to get the best education out there without incurring the travel cost which can be very significant from NZ. But over the last few weeks Telecom apparently once again had major problems with capacity/speed of their network. As a result, I had to drop out of my webinars after my 5 minutes because I could receive neither audio nor video! So, for once, please create an infrastructure that's not just catching up but is future proof for years to come!

I want faster internet and email access, more reliability, with proven network providers competing for my business. I would even sign a contract to pay an increased line charge once fibre was installed if that would get it done faster.

Because I think communication is very important, NZ will have to progress sooner or later so why not now, get ahead. Internet is so important now for everything we do, research, education, communication. And no one likes waiting.

If New Zealand is planning to compete in the global knowledge economy of the future it must improve its Internet infrastructure! I wholeheartedly support the "fibre to the door" initiative, and will certainly be among the first to use it. My business provides educational services worldwide via the Internet, therefore I rely heavily on high-speed Internet connectivity.

Time is money. Every second saved is well spent on other things. I hate waiting for the internet to turn a page. Time is precious in this day and age and NZ is behind the 8 ball.

Fibre to the door would be an awesome way to connect to the world faster and quicker. It will increase the line speed for downloading movies as well as live stream videos would be displayed properly! Can't wait for this. Please keep me updated!

NZ is very slow and behind in terms of Internet and mobile situation compare to the most of developed country in the world. It is common sense to have fibre connection. It is ridiculous to even debate weather NZ should have Fibre connection or not. It is unheard of to have a usage limit with broadband connection.

At times New Zealand's infrastructure feels and acts like that of a third world country. As a member of the OECD we should be supporting any initiative that provides a first world infrastructure, fibre to the door will allow us to build a communications infrastructure that will up there with the rest of the world. Although there will still be issues with internet connectivity to the outside world, but at least we'll be ready for when that gets there.

I need this NOW!! I live in Waipapa, Kerikeri, in Northland. Telecom offers only 100 ports, for the fastest growing area in Northland and won’t be addressing this issue till 2015. We are trying to run a business and a home business on a patchy wireless connection. Not only ridiculously expensive, but connection drops all the time. I have gone from a landline broadband connection - moved 10kms away and have stepped back to the dark ages. I am totally mystified at how business can just stop. NZ internet needs a shake up.

Fibre to the door will give New Zealand better internet than most other countries, bringing the internet and communications a new lease of life with great new possibilities. All we need now are some unlimited data bundles to go with the speed and we will be laughing.

The opportunities for internet technology are endless for both economical and technological. This would provide many areas of possible development for the future.

I have 5 school going children who rely on Internet for school. I often work from home, and also rely on this now. I have good access at the moment, but knowing I can have better is frustrating. Bring it on.

Because it will enable more innovative, world leading businesses to operate in New Zealand. It will also allow consumers greater freedom with bandwidth heavy sites without the worry of going over the expensive and small caps currently available.

As a regular ps3 gamer who used its psn network lag is a problem many folk in my position will be familiar with. The longer the lag, the more out of touch and out of game you are with your fellow gamers, to the detriment of how well you can play with/against other gamers or how much/little you can contribute to your team or clan. Being so far down under from our occidental counterparts, the fibre to the door network will bring us much more closer to anyone worldwide with a similar network. Lag is a given in gaming, you will always get it, but fibre optical wiring will render that lag unnoticeable enough to make whatever game we are sharing into an even playing field. Bring it on...

Currently NZ's broadband is slow and unreliable. We need this upgrade to keep up with the rest of the world.

New Zealand will finally be able to catch up with the rest of the world in terms of internet speeds & capacities and stop paying so much for what we have now whilst compared to the world.
SM

New Zealand is starting to look like a job with the almost third world standard of internet access we have. The internet is vital to the performance of business and the nation as a whole, and continuing to delay the implementation of this modern technology is only going to put us further and further behind the rest of the world. There really is no question about it in my mind - fibre is the only option and something should have been done about this years ago!

I support it because copper has too many restrictions in speeds. The current speeds we are getting to the copper exchange in Flaxmere is like 6mb down and that’s horrible. I also find fibre to the door is much more reliable from what I’ve heard Copper ADSL is far too old for them to keep upgrading and pushing and the network has too many intermittent issues that’s why I find fibre optic networks much more reliant. Plus Running Copper ADSL on the exchanges we are still running would be a stupid idea 15 20 years from now. It would be like dial up minus the disconnections.

NZ infra-structure is lagging behind that of other developed countries. We need fibre to the door to be competitive in the international arena. We need fibre for rural areas as well as major urban centers. We need fibre for both business and education. We need fibre NOW.
