Performance Debate Brings Passion Over ACC

Performance Debate Brings Passion Over ACC

Debate over the performance of Crown entities filled up proceedings in the House on Tuesday evening.

The wide ranging three hour set piece debate allows MPs to look at the performance and current operations of Crown entities, public organisations and State enterprises.

Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee would probably have preferred the House turn its attention to more pressing matters, but Parliament is required to hold the debate before the end of the financial year.

MPs chose to speak about everything from the New Zealand Antarctic Institute through to Genesis Energy.

The most passion in the evening came during the debate on the Accident Compensation Corporation.

Labour Deputy Leader Grant Robertson accused the Government of overseeing a shambles that had arisen from its desire to cut entitlements, coverage and rehabilitation.

National’s Whip Michael Woodhouse defended the Government’s record saying National had saved ACC from financial ruin and put it on a sustainable basis to meet its core function.

Parliament rose at 10pm leaving just a few speeches to be completed on the debate.

Parliament will sit on Wednesday at 9am.
