Protocols of the Red Crystal

A ban on prisoners receiving compensation is likely to pass into law this afternoon when Parliament resumes at 2pm

The Prisoners’ and Victims’ Claims (2012 Expiry and Application Dates) Amendment Bill is another piece of temporary legislation on the issue and seeks to ensure that any compensation paid to prisoners is redirected to victims or services to victims.

The current ban is due to expire at the end of this month and this bill will extend that for another year. A permanent legislative solution is yet to be debated by MPs.

It has the support of Labour and National.

Next on the Order Paper is the first reading of the Geneva Conventions (Third Protocol—Red Crystal Emblem) Amendment Bill.

This bill enables New Zealand to implement the Third Protocol relating to the adoption of an additional distinctive emblem - the Red Crystal - for use alongside the Red Cross and the Red Crescent.

The protocol has been awaiting ratification since 2006 and the bill itself a first reading since 2010.
