Deaths In Afghanistan Remembered

MPs unanimously passed a motion noting with sadness the death of two soldiers in Afghanistan and six injured in a fire fight on August 4, when Parliament resumed today at 2pm.

A motion congratulating the New Zealand Olympic Team for their recent performance was also passed without dissent.

The Ozone Layer Protection Act 1996: Report of the Minister of Commerce and Minister for the Environment on the operation of the Act for the period ended 31 December 2010 was presented.

The Auditor-General’s report Education for Māori: Context for our proposed audit work until 2017 was also tabled.

Select committee reports were presented on the 2010/11 financial review of the New Zealand Teachers Council by the Education and Science Committee

Petition 2011/1 of Edwina Hughes and 904 others by the Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee;

Medicines Amendment Bill (345-2) by the Health Committee;

Petition 2011/25 of Richard Aslett and 7,436 others by the Transport and Industrial Relations Committee;

International treaty examination of the Convention between New Zealand and Canada for the Avoidance of Double Taxation and the Prevention of Fiscal Evasion with Respect to Taxes on Income by the Finance and Expenditure Committee; and the

Briefing on Rehabilitation and Reintegration Services by the Law and Order Committee.

The following bills were introduced:

Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara Claims Settlement Bill;

Māori Television Service (Te Aratuku Whakaata Irirangi Māori) Amendment Bill; and the

Land Transport Management Amendment Bill.

MPs began Question Time.
