Grinding Through The EEZ Bill

The House rose shortly before 10pm interrupting the committee stage of legislation covering the Exclusive Economic Zone.

MPs were up to part three of the Exclusive Economic Zone and Continental Shelf (Environmental Effects) Bill when the House adjourned.

Labour MPs views on the bill had not warmed since it was last debated despite National introducing a wide number of amendments.

Labour argued that it did not go far enough in introducing a cautionary approach.

Labour Deputy Leader Grant Robertson feared the bill had too many loopholes and would allow deep sea drilling far too easily.

National MPs accused Labour of ``pedantry’’ and creating issues that did not exist.

Environment Minister Amy Adams argued there were sufficient protections.
