Regulatory Reform Provokes Heated Debate On Banks

The Regulatory Reform Bill passed into law today and despite its wide support managed to provoke some heated debate.

The bill, which was split into 13 parts for its final reading, seeks to reduce red tape to make life easier for business.

The responsible minister John Banks said it was a sensible bill.

However Labour MP Trevor Mallard used his third reading speech for a sustained attack on Banks saying he lacked political credibility after investigations into his political donations.

All the bills passed on a voice vote except one – The Conservation Amendment Bill - which referred to the treatment of concessions on Department of Conservation land this passed by 103 to 14 with Greens and the Mana opposing.

The House rose shortly before 6pm.
