Tobacco Tax Hike Set To Pass

MPs are set to pass into law tobacco tax increases when Parliament resumes today.

Question Time at 2pm promises to be a fiery affair after a two week adjournment full of ongoing controversial events including more accusations over the Kim Dotcom saga and revelations about insecure computer systems at the Ministry of Social Development.

Legislation on top of the Order Paper is the third reading of the Customs and Excise (Tobacco Products-Budget Measures) Amendment Bill (divided into seven bills), which legislates for four cumulative 10 percent annual rises in tobacco tax.

This will be followed by the third reading of the Commerce Commission (International Co-operation, and Fees) Bill (divided into four bills). This is intended to facilitate co-operation between the Commission and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission.
