Restoring Mana
Parliament sat under extended hours on Thursday morning to make progress on a number of bills including one concerning the pardon of a man accused of killing Carl Volkner.
MPs debated the first reading of the Mokomoko (Restoration of Character, Mana, and Reputation) Bill.
In 1866, Te Whakatōhea Rangatira Mokomoko was tried and executed for the murder of Carl Sylvius Volkner. In 1992, the Governor-General issued a free pardon to Mokomoko without consulting his whānau.
Mokomoko’s descendants felt that the terms of the pardon for Mokomoko did not expressly restore his character, mana, nor the character, mana, and reputation of his uri (descendants) and this bill legislates to do that.
The business committee also agreed that Parliament should debate the committee stage of the Ngāti Whātua o Kaipara Claims Settlement Bill and the Ngāti Manuhiri Claims Settlement Bill.
