Brendan Horan Expelled From NZ First
New Zealand First Leader Winston Peters has expelled his MP Brendan Horan from the party saying there was evidence to back serious allegations made against him.
Horan recently took leave from parliamentary duties after he was accused by family members of taking money from his mother’s bank account and her estate.
Peters told MPs in a statement to the House that he had recently received ``substantial’’ evidence and while it was ``deeply regrettable’’, he no longer had confidence in Horan and he would be expelled from the NZ First caucus.
Peters said he believed Horan should now resign from Parliament and because of the nature of the allegations he intended making no further comment on the affair.
It took some time for Peters to make the brief statement as Speaker Lockwood Smith said Peters attempt to use a personal explanation to the House to make his statement was out of order, it was not relating to his personal affairs.
After sorting out the procedural hitch, Mr Peters did tell Parliament of his decision.
It has been reported that Horan’s lawyer has said his client is denying any wrong doing and intends to return as an MP after his name is cleared.
