State Sector Overhaul Passes Into Law – Urgency Signalled

The largest reform of state sector legislation has passed into law with the support of Labour.

The third reading of the State Sector and Public Finance Reform Bill passed under Extended Hours provisions on Thursday morning

The bill was divided into the State Sector Amendment Bill (Passed 95 to 22– National, Labour, ACT, Peter Dunne and Brendon Horan in favour), Public Finance Amendment Bill (No 2) (Passed on a voice vote) and Crown Entities Amendment Bill (Passed on a voice vote).

Labour had opposed the bill at first reading, but after negotiations changes were made in select committee (mainly on employment conditions) and the bill gained the major parties support.

MPs began the third reading debate on the Taxation (Livestock Valuation, Assets Expenditure, and Remedial Matters) Bill, they are also scheduled to complete the second readings of the Statutes Amendment Bill and the Unit Titles Amendment Bill before rising for lunch.

Question Time will be held at 2pm. Following this the Government intends to debate the first reading of the New Zealand International Convention Centre Bill.

The Government has indicated to the Business Committee it wishes to put the House into Urgency on Thursday afternoon.
