Early Start For Last Sitting Day
The last sitting day of this Parliament begins at 9am on Thursday morning to set in place new parliamentary rules and pass some non-controversial bills most agree should be passed.
The House is to debate the Review of Standing Orders , this will bring in a number of changes to Parliament’s rules when it reforms after the next election.
MPs are also to debate a motion instructing the Regulations Review Committee to inquire into Parliament’s legislative response to future national emergencies. This follows review of lessons learnt from legislation passed in the wake of the Canterbury quakes.
The Business Committee has also agreed to a shortened process on the Kaikoura (Te Tai-o-Marokura) Marine Management Bill and the Parliamentary Privilege Bill to ensure they passed into law ahead of Parliament rising. The Crimes (Match-fixing) Amendment Bill is also set to get its first reading.
