Prime Minister John Key today delivered a speech to the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs on New Zealand's response to the ISIS in the Middle East and the group's implications for New Zealand security.
Proposed changes to domestic security are:
•
The Minister of Internal Affairs to cancel passports for up
to three years
• The Minister of Internal Affairs to
temporarily suspend passports for up to 10 working days in
urgent cases
• The NZ Security Intelligence Service
(NZSIS) to carry out video surveillance on private
properties for the purpose of observing activities of
security concern, modelled on the Police’s powers in the
Search and Surveillance Act
• The NZSIS to conduct
emergency surveillance for up to 48 hours prior to the issue
of a warrant, with the approval of its Director and subject
to the oversight of the Inspector General of Intelligence
and Security.
Any New Zealand contribution to the war in Iraq would be "behind the wire". Foreign Minister Murray McCully has offered further aid and said New Zealand will contribute to diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis.
