Judicature Modernisation Bill Progresses

The second reading of the Judicature Modernisation Bill was completed on a voice vote.

The bill of more than 1200 pages rewrites, modernises and re-organises the Judicature Act 1908 as well as dealing with a number of other court system changes.

The Bill is to implement proposals arising from the recommendations of the Law Commission’s review of the Judicature Act 1908 and replaces or amends a number of statutes including the appointment of judges; electronic operation of court processes, arbitration procedures and providing for final written judgements to be published online unless there is good reason not to do so.

The bill was widely supported though there were a few issues raised notably around the introduction of a mandatory retirement age for judges at 72.

MPs began the third reading of the Objectionable Publications and Indecency Legislation Bill.
