Business Number Bill Sent To Select Committee

The first reading of the New Zealand Business Number Bill has been completed this evening despite doubts from Opposition parties whether it will achieve its aim of cutting red tape.

The Minister of Business, Innovation and Employment Steven Joyce said the bill would make it easier for business to deal with Government by giving them a unique New Zealand Business Number and to be registered to a New Zealand Business Number register. This would make it easier to deal with different branches of Government giving them one number and one point of entry for interactions.

Labour’s David Clark said the aims of the bill were a laudable attempt to reduce the cost of red tape on businesses, but there was a risk of it just becoming another number and create more compliance issues for businesses.

The bill completed its first reading on a voice vote and was referred to the Commerce Committee for consideration.

The House rose at 10pm interrupting the second reading debate of the Environmental Reporting Bill.
