Call WCC if you need a place to stay

Wellington Mayor, Celia Wade-Brown, says people should ring Wellington City Council if they are stuck in the city tonight and can’t find any other alternative accommodation.

“People who can’t find their own accommodation for the night should ring the Council on 499 4444 – our welfare team will help find a place for the night,” she says.

“If you don’t have to go home to Porirua, Kapiti Coast or Hutt Valley then it’s a good idea to stay in town. The Wellington Central Library’s mezzanine floor is available too.

“If you know someone who can’t get back home and you have a bed available why not offer them a place to stay for the night. If you are on twitter and need a place to stay search #TheWellingtonWay for people's kind offers of help. It's about looking out for each other.”

Mayor Wade-Brown says, while some roads have now opened, people who are attempting to get back home tonight should check their route and make sure it’s a safe way home. Buses will be replacing trains.

“NZTA and the Wellington Regional Emergency Management Office both have the latest up-to-date information and I urge people to check them before travelling.”

Wellington City Council parking officers will also only ticket clearways and safety related offences for the rest of Thursday. Any cars left in Clifton Car Park overnight will not be charged.
