Rates Validation Bill Passes
The third reading of the Christchurch City Council (Rates Validation) Bill was completed in Parliament this evening with the council still getting some flak for the bill.
Nicky Wagner said the bill, which she sponsored, was controversial but simple. It validated Christchurch City Councils rates going back to 2004 after an attempt to write them in simple language went wrong.
Scott
Simpson, who chaired the committee which considered the
bill, said the path road to hell was paved with good
intentions and was critical of the council for making the
unprofessional mistake. He was also unimpressed the Council
had shown little contrition.
The Bill completed its third reading on a voice vote.
MPs returned to the interrupted third reading of the Social Security (Clothing Allowances for Orphans and Unsupported Children) Amendment Bill which has general support.
