Orphans Benefit Bill Passes And House Rises

The third reading of the Social Security (Clothing Allowances for Orphans and Unsupported Children) Amendment Bill was completed on a voice vote this evening.

For previous coverage on the bill see Govt Indicates Support For NZ First Bill.

MPs then began the first reading debate on the Underground Coal Mining Safety Bill.

Labour’s Damien O’Connor put the bill into the ballot in response the Pike River Coal Mine disaster. It proposes establish an interim management regime for mining based on the Queensland model.

The House rose at 10pm interrupting the debate.

Progress made this evening means a Members Ballot will be held tomorrow with one bill to be drawn.
