"Double Dipping" Bill Sent to Select Committee

The first reading of the Local Government (Auckland Council) Amendment Bill (No 3).

The Bill’s sponsor Alfred Ngaro said the bill fixes a loophole in the current legislation that permits candidates to serve as members on two or more local boards in Auckland at the same time. He said the bill had an accompanying SOP which made clear those currently sitting on two local boards would not be affected by the bill if it passed into law.

Su’a William Sio said Labour would support the bill to select committee to see whether it was a good bill and to hear from those who were in the position that the bill sought to address.

MPs said during the debate they understood there were currently four councillors serving on two boards in the Auckland area.

The bill progressed on a voice vote and was sent to the Local Government and Environment Committee for consideration.

MPs then began the first reading debate of the Environmental Protection Authority (Protection of Environment) Amendment Bill
