1. The Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras has appealed for calm and assured Greeks their bank deposits are safe. Greek banks won’t open today and people have been queuing for cash at ATMs. This follows the decision of the European Central Bank (ECB) not to increase emergency lending to Greece and its cash-strapped banks.

2. Fire has destroyed large parts of a Waikato winery overnight. At the fire’s height, 18 appliances and 70 crew were at the Vilagrad winery in Ngahinapouri, where the main building caught fire.

3. The Labour Party says once New Zealand sells state houses to overseas buyers there will be no going back. The Government has said it is willing to sell the houses to anyone if they fit the criteria. A Queensland-based community housing provider, Horizon Housing, has been in New Zealand and is interested in buying at least 400 state houses.

4. In Australia, an unprecedented alliance of business, union, environmental, and investor groups has been formed to push for urgent action on climate change policy. The members include some influential employer and industry lobby groups such as the Business Council of Australia and the Australian Aluminium Council, and groups such as the Conservation Foundation and the Council of Trade Unions.

5. Drivers who consistently keep to the speed limit and never get tickets could soon be rewarded with merit points, under an overhaul of the demerit system. The Transport Agency is also looking at handing out demerit points to speeding drivers caught on fixed cameras, and increasing fines for repeat offenders.
