Greens: Evidence Shows John Key Misled On Detainee Appeals

“The Prime Minister has made a number of false assurances to the detainees, including that they were ‘quite free to come home to New Zealand to have their applications processed’, that the detainees likely to be in a better position if they came back to New Zealand and that he had “an assurance from the Australian Government that deportees can be sent to New Zealand and have their assessment done for their appeal in New Zealand”

“Yet this immigration form shows exactly why people are staying in detention centres. If they leave, they could lose the change to stay in the country they call home and with their families." More>>

After Urgent Bill Passes: 'Returning Offenders' Come To NZ From Australian Detention

Police and Corrections are working with other agencies to manage the expected arrival of a number of returning offenders from Australia... Under the new Returned Offenders (Management and Information) Act, Police will serve eligible individuals with a determination notice which informs them that they are subject to supervision, along with their obligations.

Gordon Campbell: On John Key’s Do’s And Don’ts List When It Comes To Detainees

(a) Key shouldn’t say that the New Zealand detainees on Christmas Island include rapists and murderers when in fact, none of them are. Such claims make him look like either a misinformed fool or a deliberate liar. Either way, its not a good look... [image link] More>>

Peter Dunne: Australia's Detention Camp Treatment 'Appalling'
The modern concentration camp approach Australia has taken is simply wrong. It was wrong when the British tried it in Northern Ireland in the 1970s; it is wrong in Guantanamo Bay, or in Israel today. Australia is no different. The right to due process and fair and open trials is inalienable. So New Zealand needs to be asserting basic human rights and freedoms, not stooping to the name-calling and abuse that has passed for debate over the last week. More>>

Another Question Time Walkout: Gordon Campbell On The John Key Smear Attack

The rationale behind Prime Minister John Key's smear attack against Labour yesterday (and the subsequent walkout from Parliament) was obvious enough...

Any way you try to explain just why the Australians have simply brushed you aside as you witter on about the spirit of Anzac - and without even giving you the courtesy of keeping you informed about what is happening – you'll lose, big time. Simple truth is we're being kicked around by Australians big time, and all that John Key is saying is: do it faster. More>>
