Prime Minister John Key began his weekly press conference by congratulating the winners in the local body elections. He went on to note a report on the economic benefits of New Zealand's cycleway network, with tourism poised to overtake dairy as our largest export. Following the election of Labour MP Phil Goff to the Auckland mayoralty Key expected a by-election in Mt Roskill in December
Questions focused on housing, including the report of the Cross-Party Homeless Inquiry, Government plans to 'reconfigure' housing stock on Housing New Zealand land, and Phil Goff's proposal for a stamp duty on foreign buyers.
Other topics included the US presidential debate, the Wellington runway extension, negotiations over the PM's role at Te Tii marae on Waitangi Day, negotiations on the Kermadec marine sanctuary (no update), the costs and benefits of Helen Clark's campaign for UN Secretary-General, Phil Goff's regional petrol tax proposal, and the chances of a cabinet reshuffle and resignation announcements before the election.
