It was his first public appearance since receiving mental health care at Tīaho Mai.

The Botany MP said he wanted to attend the opening to show thanks to the doctors, nurses and other staff.

"They do a fantastic job and they're amazing people. This is their special day at the opening of the new building so I just wanted to be here to support them," he said.

"I'm not here to talk politics. I'm here as a local MP, but also as someone that is very thankful for everything they did for me but also for thousands of New Zealanders around the country."

In a speech, Health Minister David Clark thanked Mr Ross for his attendance.

"I'd like to pay particular respect and honour today to fellow MP and Botany MP Jami-Lee Ross. It is really good to have you here today."

Speaking to media after a tour of the new facility, Mr Clark said he was delighted Mr Ross was at the opening.

"I think that it's symbolic and appropriate and courageous on his part that he was here to be a part of this opening today."

Mr Ross will not be returning to parliament next week when the House resumes sitting, because he still has leave granted by the Speaker.
