Members’ Night

Members’ Night

Parliament today is likely to pass a law which will allow visitors to Stewart Island to be charged a levy.

The Southland District Council (Stewart Island/Rakiura Visitor Levy) Empowering Bill in the name of Eric Roy is set down for its third reading as MPs consider private and member’s bills.

It is intended to give the local council the power to charge a visitor levy to build infrastructure on the island which has a very low rateable population and a large demand from tourists.

This bill will be followed by the first reading of the South Taranaki District Council (Cold Creek Rural Water Supply) Bill and the committee stage of the Employment Relations (Secret Ballot for Strikes) Amendment Bill.
