The War Of The Plumbers Returns To The House

The vexed issue of setting fees for plumbers will get another airing in Parliament this afternoon.

The Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Amendment Bill will get its first reading after Question Time today.

The Bill amends the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Act 2006 and validates a disciplinary levy and an offences fee prescribed by the Plumbers, Gasfitters, and Drainlayers Board and extends the Board's power to impose levies so that the Board has funding for all of the functions it is required to carry out under the Act, including the prosecution of non-registered person.

While there has been little public interest in the issue, there has been considerable litigation, inquiries and reviews on the powers of the Board and some plumbers resentment about them.

This will be followed by the second reading of the Minimum Wage (Starting-out Wage) Amendment Bill.
