United Future’s Future
When Parliament resumed at 2pm Labour’s shadow leader of the House Trevor Mallard raised a point of order concerning Peter Dunne’s standing in Parliament now that his party had been deregistered due a lack of members.
The issue lies around the interpretation of Standing Orders and whether Dunne should inform the Speaker of the status of his party, and whether this status has any flow on effect to Dunne's entitlements as the leader of a party as opposed to an independent MP.
Speaker David Carter said in general recognition for parliamentary purposes and a party’s registration was two different things. While the United Future party was recognised at the election there was a need for transparency and he had written to Dunne on the issue and would consider the matter once he received a reply.
MPs began Question Time.
