Immigration Bill Passes Into Law

A bill allowing for the detention of asylum seekers who arrive in groups of more than 30 has passed into law.

The third reading of the Immigration Amendment Bill passed by 63 to 53 with National, ACT and United Future in support.

NZ First opposed the bill, but said this was because it did not go far enough.

Earlier a Government notice of motion - ``That, under section 11 of the Intelligence and Security Committee Act 1996, this House endorse Hon Tony Ryall as a member of the Intelligence and Security Committee, nominated by the Prime Minister under section 7(1)(c) of the Act was passed.

This will result in the replacement of Peter Dunne on the committee following his resignation from the Executive in the wake of the leaking of a report concerning the unlawful activities of the GCSB.

The vote was 63 in favour (National, Maori Party, ACT and United Future), 52 abstentions (Labour, Greens, NZ First, Brendon Horan) and 1 opposed (Mana opposed).

The House rose at 6pm interrupting debate on the third reading of the Local Electoral Amendment Bill (No 2).
