Tears Shed Over Veterans

Tears were shed in the House this evening as an MP thanked veterans for serving in the Korean War and helping her family survive atrocities.

Speaking in the first reading of the Veterans’ Support Bill, National MP Melissa Lee said she supported the bill and the service of veterans should not be forgotten.

This bill gives effect to the recommendations of the Law Commission in its 2010 report recommending a new support scheme for veterans of military service to replace the War Pensions Act 1954.

It was sent to the Social Services Committee for consideration on a voice vote.

Earlier the Health and Safety (Pike River Implementation) Bill completed its second reading on a voice vote.

The House rose at 10pm interrupting debate on the first reading of the Human Rights Amendment Bill.
