Fixit Bill May Delay TICS Bill

The Government’s plans to get the Telecommunications (Interception Capability and Security) Bill passed into law this week look in doubt with reports Parliament will deal with urgent remedial legislation this afternoon.

Fairfax Media reported the Government has held talks with Labour and the Greens and gained their support to introduce and pass through all stages "fixit" legislation to close a legal loophole.

This apparently deals with a mistake in legislation relating to the police.

Fairfax quoted Leader of the House Gerry Brownlee as confirming the Government planned to pass the legislation today.

"It's not a big deal, but if we don't fix it, it could be a big deal. So we just have to fix it," Brownlee told Fairfax.

The move will almost certainly mean there will not be time to complete the two hour third reading debate on the telecommunication bill before the House rises at 6pm.

Parliament has a one week adjournment next week.

Urgent remediation legislation is not unheard of, but is fairly rare.
