Families Commission Reformed Again
The legislation to create a new incarnation of the Families Commission has passed into law.
Anne Tolley said the Families Commission Amendment Bill would amend the Commission’s role and reduce the number of commissioners. It would do research on families and co-ordinate policy, research and evaluate cross-sector work.
It would provide independent work and research, Tolley said.
Dr Rajen Prasad said the restructuring of the commission the bill implemented had already taken place and it was a trainwreck.
The Commission was not performing and was riddled with political conflicts.
“There is no way it can resurrect itself,” he said.
The bill passed its third reading by 61 to 59with National, ACT and United Future in support.
MPs then began the second reading of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill.
