ERA Bill Gets Heated Reaction

The Government says it will amend its employment law reform bill in the committee stage, but the changes are unlikely to appease its critics.

The second reading of the Employment Relations Amendment Bill was completed this evening by 61 to 58 with National, ACT and United Future in support.

Jo Goodhew on behalf of Labour Minister Simon Bridges said the bill was a necessary reform of the ERA.

The Government however would be backing some amendments in the committee stage. These would include changes suggested by Peter Dunne about the termination of collective bargaining negotiations and also around the treatment of franchises.

Labour’s Andrew Little said the bill was an “evil”, “invidious” radical overhaul of workplace code.
