ITO Reform Bill Progresses

The Industry Training and Apprenticeships Amendment Bill completed its committee stage despite opponents saying it would privatise industry training.

Megan Wood said Labour opposed the bill as they did not want organisations other than ITOs to run industry training and they did not like the bill removing ITOs strategic leadership functions.

The bill would do harm to industry training by privatising it, she said.

National Minister Nick Smith said Labour MPs should hang their heads in shame over their record on industry training, which had woeful completion rates under the last Labour Government.

The bill completed its committee stage without amendment with most votes going 64 to 56 with National, Maori Party, ACT and United Future supporting the bill’s progress.

MPs next turned to the committee stage of the Social Security (Fraud Measures and Debt Recovery) Amendment Bill.

Earlier the Land Transport and Road User Charges Legislation Amendment Bill completed its committee stage with general support and was reported without amendment.
