Parliament Resumes

Parliament resumes today after a fortnight adjournment and the House will sit throughout May in a period which will include Budget 2014.

Currently on top of the Order Paper are the committee stages of the Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga Bill, Credit Contracts and Financial Services Law Reform Bill and the Vulnerable Children Bill.

The Government has indicated it will be moving amendments to the Psychoactive Substances Act through all stages this week in order to ban the sale of “legal highs”.

The law allowed for the sale of some substances under an interim regime until their safety or otherwise could be proven. The Government says these provisions will be removed in a bill going through all stages this week with Prime Minister John Key indicating it will also include a ban on animals being used to test the safety of the substances.

Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne said at the time of the announcement this would take place on May 8. However some media have been reporting this may take place today.
