Members’ Bill Progress At A Snails Pace

MPs continued to make progress at a snail’s pace through Member’s bills.

National MPs made full use of their calls available with Labour MPs accusing them of seeking to delay debate on the second reading of the Parental Leave and Employment Protection (Six Months' Paid Leave) Amendment Bill.

With only a few Members’ Days available before this Parliament dissolves for the election, time is running out for many more to make progress.

This evening the New Zealand Mission Trust Board (Otamataha) Empowering Bill completed its second reading on a voice vote and was set down for its third reading debate after the Business Committee agreed a committee stage was not necessary.

The third reading of the Electronic Transactions (Contract Formation) Amendment Bill was also completed on a voice vote.

The Resource Management (Restricted Duration of Certain Discharge and Coastal Permits) Amendment Bill was defeated at second reading by 68 to 51 with Labour, the Greens, Maori Party and Mana in favour.

The House then rose at 10pm and will resume tomorrow at 9am to deal with a number of Treaty settlement bills
